| REMEMBRANCE
PARADE
As a result of winning the No.75 Squadron Trophy for drill
in Central Area, (which we went on to gain second place nationally
in the Davy Drill Competition), we were asked to represent
the ATC at the Remembrance Church service held in St Pauls
Cathedral on 9 November.
Flight Sergeants Scott Cleveland, Adam Perry and Corporals
Michael Campbell, Tarryn Cleveland, and James Greenem travelled
to Wellington on the Friday night, practised on Saturday,
and then had the honour of carrying and escorting the ATC
Banner down the aisle at the service.
Our thanks go to Mr Tim Campbell (ATC Association Chairman)
for taking the cadets to Wellington and representing the Squadron
so well. |
FLYING
On Sunday 9 November we completed a successful days flying
training with the Wanganui Aero Club. Seven cadets took the
opportunity to have either one-to-one instruction or three
in the aircraft for an hour.
We have more flying planned for Saturday 15 November. We
are also trying to negotiate a further time for any cadets
who have been unable to fly on one of these dates.
Our thanks go to the ATC Association who are subsidising the
flying.

OPERATION “PEKAPEKA”
An exercise for the Squadron’s cadets was held over
the weekend of 17-19 October, in the top of the Waiouru
Training Group.
The 5 staff and 23 cadets arrived at ATC
on the Friday night and after a final check of gear we departed
. Setting up in the early evening was a new experience for
the cadets as they pitched tents, collected firewood and
had an orientation of the area before darkness set in. An
evening briefing covering safety, personal hygiene and the
use of cookers, hexies and fires was held. Saturday's training
programme was explained and the food was also distributed.
Cadets returned to their respective campsites, for hot drink
and lights out.
|
On Saturday morning all up by 0700 and breakfast under
way. All in the briefing area for the covering of environmental
care code, food preparation and the other duties of setting
up During the morning we went around to the Waipakahi Valley
to a suitable place to practice river crossings.
Aspects of river crossings were covered and once the cadets
had received "dry" bank training they then entered
the water. As different groups and sections finished they started
lunch. Following lunch Miss Smith ran a leadership exercise
and we departed back for the vans. |

|
On arrival back we found a group from Queen Alexandra's
Squadron having a mock raid in our area. There was an offer
from this group to show the cadets their various armament
and equipment. We spent some time with them and were very
appreciative for their impromptu display. We also conducted
three very interesting and varied leadership exercises in
the afternoon.
Sunday morning and while FLTLT Cleveland completed
the briefing for the Search and Rescue exercise, FGOFF Haig
departed to "get lost" leaving various clues along
the way. Under the control of the three Flight Sergeants,
the cadets found FGOFF Haig and two cadets were used as patients
in the carrying back of the stretcher. Then the groups attempted
the Confidence Course with the last challenge being a section
effort. After a late lunch and a quick emu parade we travelled
back to Wanganui, cleaned the vehicles, returned gear to the
store and pitched the tents in the Army garage for airing.
This was a very successful exercise, which was
greatly enhanced by the fine weather. This was of benefit
as we had a larger number of Basic Cadets who had not been
out on a bushcraft exercise with the Squadron before. We managed
to achieve a wide range of training keeping in mind the needs
of the cadets at all times. The benefit of having all 6 staff
on the exercise was noticeable as we managed to keep training
running smoothly while others prepared for the next part of
the training programme.

PARENTS VS CADETS SHOOT
The annual Parents vs Cadets shoot is planned for Thursday
20 November, commencing at 1730 hrs.
There will be a barbeque provided by the ATC
Association outside to provide basic sustenance whilst awaiting
the opportunity to show your son or daughter your shooting
skills.
Other dates to be confirmed: We will be going to the Intermediates
and schools that have Form 2 students for recruiting in
early December.

EXAMINATIONS
We wish all our cadets well for the examinations
they may be sitting this term and remind them to phone for
leave if they are unable to attend ATC on parade nights.
Our cadet numbers have been down a little
over the past few weeks and we hope that it is due to the
cadets studying for NCEA and Bursary examinations.

CHUCK GLIDERS
On the evening of 5 November the Basic Cadets
test- flew their Chuck Gliders which they built during Term
2 and 3.
An ideal night with a very light breeze saw
Cadets Cameron Miller and John Fergusson record the longest
flight times.
